Family Therapy for New Haven
Every individual is a product of the environment that they grew up in, which is why it is important to have a system of support, love, and encouragement. When it comes to the emotional development of a child, having a strong family unit is imperative. However, there are many factors that can disrupt this system, such as divorce, remarriage, and death, that can leave a child feeling confused and alone. To avoid this from happening it is important that family relationships are well-maintained, even when times are tough. It is completely understandable that this can be a challenging task during a period of hardship, which is why it is a wise decision to consider family therapy for help. A family therapist can help you get on back on track as a healthy, functioning family by helping you identity problems and find appropriate solutions.
Counseling for Families
At Dr. Somaia Mohamed, we offer family therapy to adults and adolescents who are looking to address the challenges that are disrupting the structure of their family’s system. We believe that by communicating in an environment that encourages expression is the key to establishing a pattern of communication that will make family relationships stronger and healthier.
Help During Major Life Transitions
Often, a child will internalize the breakdown of this system and blame themselves for any ongoing conflicts. Typically, families enter therapy because they recognize the fact that a specific hardship or drastic change is having a negative effect on their child or children, and need a third party to promote understanding and find a solution. Family counselling can help parents develop an effective way to guide children through transitions, such as:
- Divorce
- Death of a loved one
- Substance abuse
- Moving to a new home
- Chronic illness
- Mental health concerns
Techniques used in Family Therapy
At Dr. Somaia Mohamed, we use a broad range of psychological approaches, like cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) to help our clients enhance problem-solving skills, gain control over reactions, and improve communication.
What is CBT?
The way we think and behave directly affects our experience, for better or worse. The goal of CBT is to change thought patterns to improve our experiences. The first step in doing this is by identifying beliefs we may not know we hold. These sessions are typically held once a week for 6 months, but vary depending on family needs. In certain circumstances, we may give our patients different exercises, or “homework” to do between sessions, such as keeping a diary with the end-goal of recognizing the relationship between thoughts and actions.
We realize that getting everyone on board to see a family counselor can be challenging, so we commend your efforts in doing so. If you are in the New Haven area and are looking to speak with a family counsellor, then we encourage you to get in touch with us today. We are looking forward to working with you.
